Tour Horse's Head Trail. Little traffic, much wildlife, beautiful vistas! You can travel this mapped route along rural roads, by driving, hiking or biking! The 42.3 mile long Horse's Head Trail begins in downtown Westmoreland. 2.0 miles is paved, 39.3 miles is graveled, and 2.0 miles is dirt. Vehicles: Beware the dirt after a rain!

This route takes you through some of the most beautiful and remote areas of the northern Flint Hills! The first 8.0 miles along Bigelow and Sales Roads consists of steeply rolling hills to Fostoria. The next 30.0 + miles takes you up to the headwaters of Spring Creek, along Spring Creek Road, thence south on Shannon Creek Road along the Blue River and the 12,500 acre Tuttle Creek Wildlife Area. Long Parkway and Galilee Roads bring you back to Bigelow Road through beautiful scenic hills. Click here to download a PDF version of the "Horse's Head" map.

Another mapped touring route originating in downtown Westmoreland is "Vert". So named because for bikers and hikers - it is among the most "Vertical" trails in Pottawatomie County! This very scenic trail is suitable for driving, hiking and biking. If you're biking - be aware that the "vertical" rating on this trail is .77 on a 1.00 scale. Which means - it has lots (9.3 miles!) of steeeeep hills.

Of the 22.5 miles of mapped route; only .7 miles is paved, while 16.1 miles is graveled, and fully 5.7 miles is dirt only! (Motorized vehicles beware of traveling on our dirt roads after a rain! They are slick and "gummy" until dry.)

This is one of the most beautiful touring routes in northern Kansas, lying in the stark hills and lush valleys of the Northern Flint Hills. Little traffic, lots of peace and quiet, beautiful views - and some of the most challenging biking terrain in the area! Click here to download a PDF version of the "Vert" map.
