Louisville Overview
Louisville is located less than 5 miles north of Wamego along Kansas Highway 99. Today, the town is home to just around 130 people (according to the 2020 Census). Louisville and parts of the surrounding area are notable historical sites for Oregon Trail history.
Prominent in the town’s history, Louis Vieux was an early resident of the area. Vieux, who was of French and Potawatomi descent, built his homestead near the Vermillion river crossing and operated a ferry across the river; this endeavour, along with selling/trading with travellers, grew to be quite profitable and contributed to the prominence of the Viuex family in the Louisville area’s history.
