Sales Tax Rates
The current Kansas state Sales tax rate is 6.5%. In addition to the state tax rate, Pottawatomie collects an additional 1% in sales tax, making sales tax across the county a minimum of 7.5%. Some townships have additional sales tax rates. See the chart below to see the sales tax rates for each township in the county.
For reference, the city-wide tax in the Riley County portion of Manhattan is also generally 8.950%, but several city areas fall in special taxing districts with higher sales tax percentages. Kansas Property Taxes
Real Property Taxation
According to Kansas statute, real property is land and all buildings, i.e., improvements, mines, minerals, quarries, mineral springs and wells, rights and privileges appertaining thereto, except as otherwise specifically provided. By law, all property in this state, real and personal, not expressly exempt therefrom, is subject to taxation.
Personal Property Taxation
According to statute, personal property is every tangible thing which is the subject of ownership, not forming part or parcel of real property. By law, all personal property in this state, not expressly exempt there from, is subject to taxation.
Pottawatomie County Mill Levies
The mill levy is the tax rate that is applied to the assessed value. In general terms, the mill levy is determined by dividing the dollars needed for local services by the assessed property value in the service area. An additional amount is then added for public schools. After the local government budgets are published and hearings are completed, the County Clerk computes the final mill levies for each tax unit and certifies the tax roll to the County Treasurer for collection.
Pottawatomie County has the second-lowest average mill levy in the state, making it an attractive location for business and private investments.
