Housing affordability has become a widespread issue across the United States, affecting both urban areas and small rural communities. Key reasons include rising construction costs, land and infrastructure costs, limited housing supply, migration trends, interest rates and financing challenges, and more.
PCEDC and Wamego Chamber of Commerce will co-host a final candidate forum this fall, in preparation for the General Election taking place on Tuesday, November 5th. The forum will be at the Wamego Senior Center on October 8th from 6-7:30pm.

As Pottawatomie County moved through the second quarter, there was an increase in home sales and building permits. This trend aligns with previous years, where spring and summer months typically see more home sales compared to earlier in the year. The year-to-date sales and use tax totals for 2024 are also comparable to last year’s figures, suggesting stable retail activity across the county.
Plan on attending the Community Career Fair on Wednesday, August 28th from 10am to 4pm at Iron Clad at 427 Lincoln Ave. in Wamego. This event, cohosted by Pottawatomie County Economic Development Corporation (PCEDC), Wamego Chamber of Commerce, and KansasWorks will feature employers from across the region.

In August primary elections will take place in four of the five districts, with a general election in November. Co-hosting with local cities and chambers, we facilitated a County Candidate Forum in every electing district this summer. Meet the candidates here.
We want to provide the community with an update on the ongoing efforts in response to the closure of Caterpillar’s Wamego facility. The impact of this closure on our community cannot be overstated, and we are dedicated to helping every affected employee and family through this transition. The Wamego Caterpillar Facility notified their employees on Thursday afternoon, June 6, that the plant will close mid-2025.
Overall economic indicators show a strong labor market with a low unemployment rate. Building permits are picking up at the end of the quarter and are on pace with previous years, though 2023 overall permits were down. Sales tax revenue is down slightly this quarter compared to the first quarter of last year, but still on an upward trend.
